What is an Access Control system?
An Access Control System can be either mechanical or electronic and is designed to control who has access to an area.
Mechanical access control can be used on individual doors both internal and external. Entry is gained by use of a push button code and turn of a release handle. An electronic systems allows an administrator to precisely define access privileges for each user and also instantly update them within the system. A card system is one of the most common types of access control - using a card with a magnetic stripe which can be swiped through a reader on the door - but there are a number of different identification media available.
Choosing the Right System
Standalone access control is used to control access on one or many independent doors in a building. Access is gained by using a numeric code or by presenting a proximity or magstripe token, depending on which type of reader is fitted.
Referred to as 'PC based' or 'Networked' access control, these systems can be used to control one or many doors in a building. Access is gained by in the same way as the standalone system. PC based access control offers central control, via a network.
