Dwr Cymru (Welsh Water)
Lincoln Security engineers have recently completed a major three-year project to fit thousands of new Abloy locks and padlocks to Welsh Water properties.
Three teams of two engineers travelled the length and breadth of the principality between November 2008 and May 2010 and successfully delivered the project on time and to budget.
‘This was a huge, complex project that involved renewing locks and padlocks on the doors, gates and buildings of every water-related site owned by Welsh Water,’ said Installations Director Julie Froggatt.
‘Because the work involved travelling between both dirty water and potable water sites, we also incorporated clear method statements and processes into our project plan to ensure that there was no cross-contamination. All of our engineers were fully trained in the health and safety requirements regarding contamination and carried Blue Water cards.’
Key to the success of the work was highly effective project management. For example, time spent on the route logistics with Welsh Water’s area managers ensured that the engineers were able to use their time more effectively.
‘Lincoln Security won the business partly because of our long experience of this type of project, having previously carried out a similar four-year installation for Yorkshire Water, and having experience also with the Environment Agency and Anglian Water,’ said Julie.
‘At the end of the project we also supplied Welsh Water with an up to date status report detailing all the work carried out, the specifications of products used and any areas where our engineers had identified the need for further work.’
Welsh Water’s security co-ordinator, Mick Heir, said: The project went really well. Initially it was a big learning curve, so Julie’s help in scheduling the work and providing project management really made a difference.’
