New automatic door system brings freedom of access to disabled students
Lincoln Security has helped disabled Lincoln University students to enjoy greater freedom, by upgrading automatic doors in student accommodation so they can be operated by wheelchair users.
“A number of the doors only opened automatically from the outside, but had a handle inside, making it difficult for a student using a wheelchair to get out,” said Lincoln Security’s Jason Healy.
“We designed an automatic door system, conforming to the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) requirements, that enables disabled students to come and go more easily.”
Lincoln Security's automatic operator system has been fitted to the external door of the building as well as to apartment and bedroom doors in three apartments. A modified key fob allows the door to be opened automatically from either side.
“We modified all the existing door frames, which included the heavy aluminium external doors. We also reconfigured the existing key fob readers and fitted new lock cases to each of the customised doors. We are now in talks with the University about developing a further three apartments next summer,” said Jason.
As part of a continuing relationship with the University, Lincoln Security has also supplied the master key cylinders and key to all buildings at the Lincoln campus.

Lincoln Security works with many educational establishments across the region.For example, it has provided the master key suite at Leicester’s De Montfort University, Grantham College and the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.
