The Importance of Servicing & Maintenance

Its an experience almost everyone has gone through, something you use almost every day; a door, your boiler, your or maybe your alarm system suddenly won’t work. What on earth has caused this you wonder. It was working perfectly yesterday.

Unfortunately, this is a situation that many of us find ourselves in far too often. The things we use the most and rely on, on a daily basis are often overlooked and neglected. Leading to parts deteriorating causing faults and failures.  Locks, Doors and even CCTV systems require regular Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) in order to ensure their longevity and ultimately save you money.

Identifying and rectifying minor issues before they develop is the best way to ensure that your site security doesn’t end up costing the earth. After all, replacing a door closer or few door hinges is going to be far cheaper than replacing a Fire Door.

Fire Doors & Locks

If years of experience installing, maintaining and fixing locks has taught us anything, it’s that preventative maintenance is vital to ensuring the longevity of your door hardware. Door hinges and locks are often a main failure point due to their inherent high usage.

Failure to address slamming doors due to door closers needing minor adjustment or even replacing for stronger type causes inherent problems to all the hardware on the door especially to the hinges and to the lock resulting in the door coming out of alignment, strain on hinges and damage to the lock bolt.

Lincoln Security’s annual preventative maintenance programmes help to increase the lifespan of door and locking hardware through thorough door and lock assessment.

Engineers complete a 5 point check on door and locking hardware to ensure that all aspects are in good condition and functioning properly. Any issues spotted are rectified and logged on the maintenance document ensuring problems are nipped in the bud.

Automatic Doors

Automatic Doors require annual maintenance in order to adhere to BS16005, depending on the frequency of use doors may need to be services every 6 months, in addition any Engineers carrying out maintenance must be certified to BS 7036. Lincoln Security are members of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) who helped to develop the first codes of practice for the industry. This is to certify that our engineers are trained to the specific standards required.

Our Engineers carry out a comprehensive list of checks and calibrations to the door before completing the door log book.

Padlocks

Padlocks take a bit of a beating, often overlooked and mistreated, exposed to the elements at all times of the year. The intricate pin system housed within the padlock body can over time jam, rendering the padlock inoperable.

Annual maintenance helps to ensure that all parts are in good condition and lubricated for proper function.

CCTV Systems

CCTV cameras and cabling are often overlooked when they’re working correctly. But when exposed to the elements, especially over the winter months, parts and cabling can degrade over time leading to connectivity or viewing quality issues. Annual servicing helps to reduce IP degradation on external cameras and corrosion of connections exposed to the elements in addition our Engineers will check for any software updates on the system.

Fire & Intruder Alarms

British Standard BS 5839 mandates that all Fire Alarms are serviced at six-month intervals to ensure they are functional and in good working order. Checks include Engineers inspecting manual call points, automatic fire detectors, battery levels and decibel levels, keeping your business and staff safe from fire.

Intruder Alarms are often overlooked until they go wrong, but whilst you go about your day, the sensors installed around your business are working away to ensure that every door and window is kept guarded against unwanted entry. Some insurance companies offer discounts on premiums if your premises has an intruder alarm though this is usually necessitated by having a regular maintenance contact.

Jason Healy, Lincoln Security’s Commercial Director said

The impact to a business of not being able to access a door, set an alarm, unlock a padlock or a multitude of other scenario’s all come back to a simple denominator, Maintenance.

The importance of looking after our assets even if its only checking them once every 6 months could help prevent a breakdown and prolong the life of the asset by 5 years, possibly longer. A simple check of tightening a screw in a hinge or oiling a dry joint will only take a few minutes but it’s those basic checks that keep our assets working correctly, fault free and keeping our businesses operational.

Ensuring regular servicing and maintenance is carried out can maximise the lifespan of your security products and save your business money in the long term by ensuring issues are rectified before they become a bigger problem.
